What "Modern" Should Actually Mean in Core Banking

Every core banking vendor calls themselves 'modern.' But peel back the marketing and most are the same legacy architecture with a new logo and a REST API bolted on. Five structural tests that separate actual modern from marketing modern.

Every core banking vendor calls themselves "modern."

But when you peel back the marketing, most of them are the same legacy architecture with a new logo and a REST API bolted on.

After spending two years building financial infrastructure for African banks, here's what modern should actually mean. Not buzzwords. Not feature lists. Actual structural tests.

## 1. API-first, not API-bolted

Can a developer go from signup to first API call in under 30 minutes with zero sales calls? If the answer is no, it's not API-first. It's API-afterthought.

Every capability should be accessible via documented, versioned REST APIs. Not a legacy system with an API wrapper. Not a SOAP service hidden behind a gateway.

## 2. Compliance built in, not bolted on

Identity verification, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring, and case management should share one customer record. One event stream. One audit trail. Not four vendors with four data models connected by middleware that nobody wants to touch.

If your KYC vendor doesn't know what your AML vendor flagged, you don't have a compliance program. You have a prayer.

## 3. Multi-tenant by design, not by hack

True tenant isolation — separate databases, not a WHERE clause with tenant_id. White-label everything. Your customer's brand, not the vendor's. Onboard a new bank in hours, not months.

If tenant setup requires a "professional services engagement," it's not multi-tenant — it's multi-invoice.

## 4. Built for where the growth is

Native support for mobile money, local payment rails, local identity systems, and local regulatory requirements. Not a Western platform "localized" for emerging markets.

NIN, BVN, Ghana Card, M-Pesa, MTN MoMo, NIP, NIBSS, GhIPSS — built in from day one. Not patched in after a bank in Lagos complains.

The fastest-growing financial markets on earth deserve infrastructure built for them.

## 5. Future-proof, not feature-frozen

Modern means the platform evolves. Stablecoin wallets alongside traditional deposits. Cryptographic identity credentials that travel with the customer. Voice banking in six African languages for illiterate populations. AI that monitors regulatory changes and proposes rule updates automatically.

These aren't roadmap slides. They should be shipping.

If your vendor's last major innovation was adding a dark mode to the dashboard, ask harder questions.

How does your current stack measure up? What would you add to this list?
